Gaiam Balance Ball Chair Review

The Gaiam Balance Ball Chair is a simple, functional piece of fitness equipment. It first gained fame when featured on the popular TV program, "Good Morning America."

Essentially, it's a heavy-duty molded PVC chair that employs a balance ball as a cushion.

This product was designed by Dr. Randy Weinzoff, a chiropractic professional. It's intended to develop core muscles and improve spinal alignment--needs that are certainly not met by ordinary office chairs.

Although it includes a support bar for lumbar support, you should not lean heavily against it. It is mainly to provide extra stability while you're seated in the chair.

The chair comes with 4 easy-glide casters, allowing smooth motion across the floor. Two of these wheels can be locked in place, and the manual directs you to attach these to the rear of the chair, placing the regular casters on the front.

The balance ball itself is made of anti-burst vinyl (no latex content). This means the exercise ball is expandable and supple enough to ensure the safety of the user, whether just sitting on it or using it to perform exercises.

The Gaiam Balance Ball chair comes with a Desktop Exercise Guide. The guide covers stretching movements that you can perform while seated in the chair, or using only the exercise ball.

The balanceball chair is easy to assemble. Assembly requires only one tool (included).

The product is designed to accommodate users 5’ to 5’11” tall.  The maximum weight capacity is 300 pounds.

The Gaiam Balance Ball Chair comes in 5 colors, to match a variety of rooms: charcoal, plum, pool, and sage.

Consumers who have used this exercise ball chair give it high marks. Users report that the chair is quite comfortable, and helps to improve posture and relieve tension in the back and neck.

However, consumers do state that this balanceball chair does take some getting used to, especially if your core muscles are underdeveloped. Consequently, you may experience some muscle soreness during the first week or two of using the chair.

One potential drawback for some users is that the chair lacks arm rests. This could cause some discomfort. Also, you will need to occasionally inflate the exercise ball; an air pump is included.

Lastly, you will want to make sure that the chair offers enough elevation for you to sit comfortably at your desk. Some users reported that the chair was too low for their desk configuration.

Overall, however, feedback on the Gaim Balance Ball Chair is positive.

The chair measures 21 x 31 x 22 inches (W x H x D) and weighs 13 pounds.  The back of the chair is 2.5 feet in height, and the base measures 20 inches wide from one side of the wheels to the other.

Summary

If you spend a significant amount of time sitting at a desk and suffer lower back pain and an aching neck and shoulders, the Gaim Balance Ball chair is worth consideration. A majority of consumers who have used this product report that it has eased pressure on their back and helped them develop better posture.
