Pedometer . . . count your footsteps while you're walking and running for fitness
The Pedometer, like a few other types of exercise equipment we've reviewed, has recently exploded into widespread use.
This handy gadget senses your body's motion to count your footsteps. With research suggesting that you should walk 6,000 steps per day to maintain good health, and 10,000 steps per day to lose weight, it's easy to understand why this monitoring device has become so popular. Most attach to your belt or the top of your waistband. Others can be placed in a purse or pocket, or worn on your wrist like an ordinary watch. In addition to counting footsteps, common features include measuring the distance you've traveled and your speed, estimating calories burned, and displaying the time. Some include a heart rate monitor and use GPS technology to accurately measure speed and distance. Many models also track your activity over a 7 day period, information which then can be uploaded to your computer, to gauge your progress over the weeks, months, and year. Omron, Sportline, Yamax, Accusplit, and Garmin are among the most popular brands. Prices range from $15 to $150. If you'd like to find out more, check out our reviews, ratings, and buying tips.
